Y10 Debating team secure Regional Finals place in the ESU Schools’ Mace competition

Our Year 10 Debating and Public Speaking team participated in the second round of the ESU Schools’ Mace competition last night. They faced tough opposition from a team of sixth formers but confidently and articulately presented their case in opposing the motion “This House would use proportional representation in UK national elections“.

In preparation for the debate the team undertook extensive research into the various models of voting and democratic processes. They gained a wider understanding of the UK electoral system, and the structures used in other European countries. In the debate the team presented a range of practical and ideological arguments against a shift towards Proportional Representation and delivered them with passion and conviction. The judge praised the logical way in which they organised and prioritised their arguments and how effectively they worked together as a team.

Congratulations to the team as they progress to the regional finals of the competition which will take place later this term.

Our staff and students would like to echo the words of the judge in her feedback – it was a pleasure to participate in and listen to all of the debates on the night. Thank you to the ESU for providing this excellent opportunity for our students.
