Reading For Pleasure

In Year 10 and 11 our students have weekly reading session in form time. The reading material consists of newspaper articles to help students keep up to date with current world affairs and helping to inform their choices about their future. Each term the articles are focused on a principle of Catholic Social Teaching. Catholic Social Teaching is a set of principles which help guide Catholics on specific ways they can put “love your neighbour” into action.

Last term we focused on Solidarity (working together), reading about the impact of poverty on families, loneliness for the elderly and examples of how people have worked together to try and tackle these issues. For example, students in Devon set up an organisation called ‘Spark UK’ which provides a space for teenagers to ‘spark’ a conversation with someone about their feelings.

This term we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching principle of stewardship, also known as ecological justice. This means we are reading articles about climate change, the LA fires and environmentally friendly building work happening in Leeds. Our students are given an opportunity to put their own faith into action through the Common Good group led by Miss Goode and Faith in Action led by Mrs Davies and other members of the RE team. Each article and corresponding activity aim to ‘inspire excellence and encouraging every individual to be the person God calls us to be’ as we work together to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and we continue our role as stewards of God’s creation.
